How the Shopify theme detector works

Every Shopify storefront embeds a small JavaScript object — Shopify.theme — in its pages. It contains the theme's name, its unique ID and, for themes bought on the official Theme Store, a theme_store_id. Our detector reads these values straight from the page source, the same data your browser receives.

Merchants often rename their theme ("my-live-theme-v3"), which is why we cross-reference the Theme Store ID against our database of official themes — Dawn, Impulse, Prestige, Motion, Warehouse and dozens more — to recover the real theme name whenever possible. When newer themes expose their schema version, we show you exactly which release the store is running.

No Theme Store ID? Then the store runs a custom or third-party theme, and we tell you so instead of guessing.

What makes a good Shopify theme?

Speed first

A theme that loads in under two seconds outsells a pretty one that takes five. Look for clean code, optimized images and minimal reliance on heavy scripts.

📱

Mobile is non-negotiable

Most shoppers browse on their phone. Always preview a theme at several screen sizes before committing — sticky add-to-cart buttons and fast taps matter.

🛒

Built-in conversion features

Trust badges, product filtering, quick-view modals and upsell blocks all lift sales. A single-product store needs very different features than a 500-SKU catalog.

Finally, consider your niche: free themes like Dawn work great for simple stores, while premium themes offer the advanced customization large catalogs need. Use the detector above to see which themes the best stores in your niche already run.

Shopify theme detector FAQ

How do I find out what Shopify theme a website is using?+

Paste the store's URL into the Shopify theme detector above and click Detect. In seconds you'll see the theme name, its version, and whether it comes from the official Shopify Theme Store or is a custom build.

How accurate is the Shopify theme detector?+

Very accurate for stores using official themes: Shopify embeds the theme name and Theme Store ID directly in every page, and we read those exact values. If a store renamed its theme, we still recover the official name from its Theme Store ID whenever possible.

What does it mean if the theme is 'custom'?+

If a theme has no Theme Store ID, it was either built from scratch, bought outside the official store (e.g. Turbo or Flex by Out of the Sandbox), or heavily forked from an existing theme. The name shown is the one the merchant gave it.

Can I get the same theme for my own store?+

Yes. Official themes can be found on the Shopify Theme Store — we link straight to the matching theme when we detect one. You'll need a Shopify store first, which you can start with a free trial.

Does this work on any Shopify store?+

It works on any publicly accessible Shopify storefront, including stores on custom domains. Password-protected, pre-launch stores can't be analyzed because their pages aren't public.
